Soil mechanics is really important in the field of civil engineering. Actually, when we want to design the building then most important things is foundation which is also called root of building. If we use different materials which able to tolerate the load but if soil of that area is not good then think that you materials be stable. Ofcourse, not. 
For any construction such as bridge, cassions etc we must have to taste the soil that it able to bear load or not.
